The government abolished Pakistan’s statistics department according to an Express Tribune report.
The report indicated that the government transferred the function of exporting a population census and granted the administrative control of the Pakistani Bureau of Statistics (PBS) to the Ministry of Planning and Development.
The decision to place the PBS in the Ministry of Planning was made just one month before the meeting of the National Accounting Committee (NAC), which will approve the preliminary figures for next year’s economic growth, the report adds.

He also said the statistical department secretary had chaired the NAC meeting, which will now be appointed by the planning secretary.
The government has already expressed its dissatisfaction with the poor state of the PBS.
The Department of Statistics is also responsible for calculating inflation reading, which is now under the supervision of the Minister of Planning, Development and Reform.
All the functions of the Statistical Division were also transferred to the Planning, Development and Reform Division.
The Statistics Division will rename the “Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation” section and will now be part of the Cabinet Secretariat, according to the Cabinet Department.
According to the report, the decision to abolish the Statistics Division, on the recommendation of the Working Group on Institutional Reforms under the guidance of the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Institutional Reforms and Advisory Services, dr. Ishrat Husain, taken.
The Planning Division will now be responsible for preparing a comprehensive integrated plan for developing and improving statistics in Pakistan. It will also prepare the annual program according to the agreed priorities and assign responsibilities for its implementation, the report added.
In addition, the planning department is also committed to formulating a policy on general statistics and adapting Pakistan’s statistical system to the policy.
The Planning Division will co-ordinate with provincial and federal governments as well as international organizations on statistical matters that are responsible for trade, industry, prices, expenses, subscriptions and bills, cash flow and balance of payments.
The Planning Commission will also be the executive agency for the Industrial Statistics Act and the General Statistical Reorganization Act 2011. It will also have a national agricultural, livestock and population census.
Government has also created the Benazir Income Tax Program of the Ministry of Finance and placed it under the newly created Division of Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation.
The administrative control of Pakistan Baitul Mal has been transferred to the Social Protection Division. In addition, the Trust for Voluntary Organization has also been transferred from the Economic Affairs Division to the Social Protection Division.
